Bubba Watson: Bio, Christian Faith and Quotes

Dec 06, 2014

Bubba Watson is a professional golfer. If you aren’t an avid golf fan, that’s okay—you still probably heard his name come through ESPN every now and again. Born Gerry Lester Watson, “Bubba” got his start golfing at a young age. Since then, he has gone on to win a couple Master’s tournaments, earn a lot of money, and gain widespread success and respect around the professional golfing community. Amazingly, he is also an outspoken Christian and uses his platform as a golfer to share the love of Christ to anyone who will listen. In case you don’t know too much about Bubba Watson, this article will briefly describe his life, his Christian faith, and some of his notable quotes.

Here is Bubba Watson: Bio, Christian Faith, and Quotes!

Brief Biography

Bubba Watson was born and raised in Florida, right near Pensacola. At a young age, he was afforded the opportunity to golf and learn about the game. While at Milton High School, Watson played on the golf team. It’s not surprising to learn of Watsons’ success coming out of Milton High School; matter of fact, the school has graduated some great professional athletes, such as NFL players Lawrence Tynes and Cortland Finnegan and professional golfers Boo Weekley and Heath Slocum (who graduated just before he attended).

After graduating High School, Watson went on to play golf for a community college in Alabama. There, he was able to gain some recognition and awards, which prompted him to transfer to the University of Georgia, who was one of the top golfing schools around. He played there for two years and was able to help lead the Bulldogs to an SEC title in 2000. It wasn’t until 2003, however, that Watson would become a professional golfer. From 2003-2005, he played in the nationwide tour and finished 21st on the Nationwide Tour’s money list, which made him the absolute last player to qualify for the PGA Tour.

In the last couple of years, Watson was able to pull off a win at two Master’s Tournaments (in 2012 and 2014). This, of course, signifies just how good he really is and that he is still, in fact, a great golfer. Because of his age, it is quite possible to imagine him playing and winning for many more years to come.

Christian Faith

Bubba Watson is an outspoken Christian. Even on his Twitter page, Watson makes it clear what his priorities in life are: Christian. Husband. Daddy. Pro Golfer. That is what he is all about, and in that precise order! Believe it or not, his Twitter page is one of the ways he is able to utilize his platform as a professional golfer for the Lord; even before winning the Master’s Tournament, he made it a point to tweet out bible verses to his followers. Although many people criticized this, Watson responded to the naysayers by telling them he will not stop doing it and they are more than welcome to unfollow him at any time. He has repeatedly said that the most important thing in his life is God, followed by his wife and kids. In addition to all of this, he is a regular attendee of the PGA Bible Study held every week during the tour. For Bubba, it is a way for him to learn more about the Word of God and ensure that is his priority.

“Getting more in the Word and realizing that golf is just an avenue for Jesus to use me to reach as many people as I can.”

“I don't play golf for fame.”

“It's an honor to see that green jacket in the bedroom closet, but I'm not going to become somebody else because I won the Masters.”

“I have to choose my words carefully.”

“Lecrae [a Christian rapper] said it the best. He doesn’t want to be a celebrity. He doesn’t want to be a superstar. He just wants to be the middle man for you to see God through him.”

“Most important things in my life- 1. God 2. Wife 3. Family 4. Helping others 5. Golf.”

So, now you know enough about Bubba Watson to sound intelligent to some of your golf friends. Well, maybe not…but at least you know more about a great Christian man who isn’t playing golf for fame or money, but to bring glory to Christ and have fun while doing it. It’s great to see more Christian athletes that truly make an impact in their sport, not just in success, but in telling people about Jesus.
